The Gourmet Wake
The Gourmet Wake Project was a result from Gourmet Magazine announcing its closing on October 5th, 2009.
The artist initially wrote out by hand all the recipes from the final issue (November ’09) in script onto index cards. This labor of love was not only a way of mourning the publication but also attributing honor to homemade, slow food.
The collection of recipe cards prompted the idea of hosting a wake, celebrating Gourmet, cooking, and dinner parties. Letterpress invitations were distributed to guests, ranging from neighbors to colleagues to friends of friends. Each invitation included one of the recipe cards that guests were to make and bring to the wake.
The wake took place on Saturday, December 5th, 2009 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Approximately 75 guests attended the event, with wining and dining occurring until the wee hours of the morning.
